Social Life

I spend a lot of time with my friends talking usually about things that are either irrelevant to all life or so philosophical that it causes those of lesser intellect heads to overload and explode from sheer Awesomeness, so it can get messy. Since these people pretty much sum up my social life, I would like to tell you about them.

The Corner, which is actually just a small section of the cafeteria, is where my people and me cause all the head explosions and chaos. We all come together for the sole purpose of enjoying life…usually through very nerdy gaming. The corner is my place of insanity and joy and it continues to be for all newcomers, so now that you know about The Corner, lets meet a couple of them.

Let’s Start off with Austin Regan

Austin and his Vanguard

Austin and his Vanguard

Austin Regan is like my brother from another mother, which basically means i mooch off of on a regular basis for food. Austin is a fellow gamer so our interests are usually parallel. He is also our “group/clique/people’s” adorable red panda.

My head is just slightly bigger than Austin's...slightly.

My head is just slightly bigger than Austin’s…slightly.

Next we will talk a bit about Autumn Cano

Don't let the smile fool you, she's a fighter.

Don’t let the smile fool you, she’s a fighter.

She is a new member of “The Corner.” A freshman whose love of Magic the Gathering rivals even my own. She has slowly integrated into the corner and become one with the cult thus making here a friend, ally, and TCG sister.

Just a few other Corner members:

Lastly, Let us discuss Craziness generator Brittany Hewing

Brittany uses Sleep. It's Super Effective

Brittany uses Sleep. Antonio is Fast Asleep.

Brittany embodies all the insanity and chaos that The Corner loves and cherishes. When you see her she is either laughing, hugging, biting, beating, eating, throttling, yelling, or loving at something or someone, and we all return it to her tenfold, well, we at least attempt to do so. She provides fun and delight and anarchy to all around her, which is why she is loved by all around her.

Chris Sanchez (Back) uses confusion. It's super effective

Chris Sanchez (Back) uses stalker face. It’s super effective.

I love the corner because many of us, as is expected, come to the group not really having many close friends on campus, and, as is also expected, being with a group of people on a regular basis will cause relationships to develop…or we’ll just slowly suck you into the cult. MWAHAHAHAHA!!! I hope that all you prospective students find your group of weirdos and cherish them as I do mine.  And don’t worry, there out there, somewhere, in this crazy wilderness we call life.  Until next time readers, Enjoy Life

Hello Everyone!

Hi everyone. I hope that everyone had a great homecoming weekend. There were plenty of events that took place at Saint Xavier University over the past week. Events such as, a hypnotist, the football game on Saturday and a host of other events that everyone can enjoy. However, if you’re looking for some events in the Chicagoland area, than there are a hosts of other upcoming events coming to Chicago.

Music artist The Weeknd.

Music artist The Weeknd.

Music artist, The Weeknd is coming to the Chicago Theatre this Sunday, October 13 as well as next Monday, October 14 as well. The Weeknd is a great up-and-coming artist from Canada, who has made quite a name for himself. He has just recently came out with his album entitled, “Kiss Land,” so he’ll be most definitely be performing song from that album.

bank of america

Bank of America Marathon

Another event that is highly anticipated in Chicago every year is the Bank of America Marathon. The marathon will be taking place Sunday, October 13, in Grand Park. Thousands upon thousands of people from all over the world  line up each year to take part of the event and it never disappoints. It’s always a great atmosphere whenever people partake in this event. If you don’t want to participate, you can just take in the event live as a spectator. People from all over coming to Chicago to take in the event and it is a sight to see. The marathon is for a great cause as well, as many of the runners choose different charities to run for to raise money. There are also events for people in wheelchairs as well. The race is always a great spectacle and this upcoming Sunday’s race will be no different.

Happy Homecoming!

Hey Everyone!

You know how Christmas is marketed as the “most wonderful time of the year’? Well, in my world, it’s not. Christmas is great and all, but in my humble and extremely significant opinion (sarcasm), homecoming week at SXU truly is the best time of the year.  Most of my fellow cougs would more than likely agree with me on this point, but for those of you who are unfamiliar with SXU’s tradition…let me tell you more about it.

Here are the top 10 reasons why SXU’s homecoming > any other school:

1) Free Swag

From free SXU t-shirts & tie dying to free pub glasses for seniors….SXU hooks its students up with lots of items that will totally help us showcase our cougar pride! All for the price of $0!

2) Free Food

How can you not love free Starbucks?

Yes, I know I already talked about all the free stuff students get during homecoming week, but food is equally just as important! Because we have a Starbucks on campus, a lot of homecoming events feature free sample size drinks from that restaurant. As we all know, Starbucks is pretty pricey, but free drinks can allow us to save some cash and splurge without emptying our wallets.  One really cool aspect of homecoming this year was the SX Brew Bus. This bus literally showed up to the various buildings on campus and passed out those free Starbucks drinks I talked about. Talk about great customer service! And if you attended the Midweek Mayhem, you got to enjoy musical performances by SXU students, all while eating tons of free and delicious food.

3) Serving Others

Something I absolutely love about Saint Xavier is the fact that this university has eight core values that it instills on every person that walks into this school. One of these values is service, which is an extremely important part of life. Every homecoming week, the S.T.A.T. Brown Bag Project takes place. Students, faculty, and alumni all work together to make lunches for various shelters and organizations that feed the less fortunate. So homecoming week for us isn’t just about having fun and showing our SXU pride, it’s about helping people in need!

4) Tailgating

Need I say more?

5) Hypnotist Christopher Carter

Yup, we have a hypnotist come to our school to hypnotize our students. It’s actually hysterical though and not as weird as you would think. Watching your classmates in deep sleep doing crazy and ridiculous tasks will make you die of laughter.

6) The Heritage Ball

My two dates and I before the dance!

My two dates and I before the dance!

This invite only dance, which takes place at a different location each year (it’s happening at the Harold Washington Library this time around), is one of my favorite events. Student leaders and honors students get to spend a night of dancing and fun with friends and classmates. But don’t worry, even if you’re not a student leader or an honors students, you can always find someone looking for a date who can take you! This year, I’m going with my boyfriend, Will, but am bringing one of my residents along as my plus one. I know, I’m such an awesome RA (sarcasm again).

7) Cougarpalooza

Before the homecoming football game, tons of people go and hang in the Schmitt Quad to take part in this fun event. There are games, free food (of course!), and great music to enjoy with your fellow Cougars! Hopefully you can peel yourself away from tailgating for a few minutes to check this out. ;)

8) The Cougar 5K Run/Walk

Need to burn some extra calories before you start begin tailgating/stuffing your face at Cougarpalooza? I know I sure do! And the Cougar Run is a great way to do so. Yes, it’s early in the morning (9AM on a Saturday) but it’s actually a smart way to start your morning. The cost is only around $30 and it’s totally worth it! Definitely a must do during homecoming week.

9) Football

Go watch our 2011 NAIA Champion football team kick some butt and take some names during one of the most exciting games of the season!

10) Pictures with Champ the Cougar

The new and improved SXU mascot.

Not my personal favorite because I’m afraid of mascots, but people love Champ! He got a little makeover once our school logo was changed, so he’s kind of a celebrity here on campus now. He attends all the various homecoming events so get a picture with him while you can! I told ya, he’s pretty popular!

So we may not be a huge school with a ton of students, but we’re a little school with a huge heart. Homecoming is so great because the faculty, staff, and students care so much about SXU and have so much pride within this university. I promise, homecoming week will not disappoint! It’s just too bad we have to wait a WHOLE 365 days until next homecoming. :(

The Werks!! WERK IT:)

@ The Werks, Electric Forest!! WERK IT:)

This summer I funded an experience that completely revamped my attitude and kind of changed my life. I went to four music festivals! I knew plenty ofpeople that went to them and loved the openness and happy energy that almost everyone embodied. The first one I attended was by far my favorite: Summer Camp Music Festival. Though it rained 2 ½ of the 4 days, I felt surrounded by a happy, caring, and kind community. There was one guy who came by our campsite and was handing out rain ponchos. Everybody works towards making the environment not only enjoyable, but so life-changing that you will not want to leave

There’s literally a vibe in the air that screams PLUR- Peace Love Unity and Respect- everywhere. It’s a wide spread sentiment that we are getting less and less connected with people and it seems that individuals have generally stopped caring as much about others and humanity as a whole. There were people there that were kind, open and loving; it didn’t matter who you were or what you looked like- you felt taken care of. I came back from that first weekend with a refreshed view of my family, social life, and jobs; I suddenly had a newfound positive aura and desire to help everyone and anyone. That being said, moving into a dorm has been another life changing experience.

I’m extremely happy to have had this revelation; I believe that my current time living in Regina Hall would not be such a growing and awesome experience had I not.  To be the only one responsible for myself, to have known 2 people that I met at FOCUS over the summer, to go down a bed size, and to have a room the size you used to have for yourself but sharing it with a pretty much stranger: I literally love it. It’s hard, but living in a four-story building with a bunch of new interesting people gives me the sense of community I’ve experienced at festivals like Summer Camp and Electric Forest. Granted, it’s work; ya know, school. But, it is an exploration of life nevertheless so i’m having fun and making connections that are giving me the hope and light I found this summer. This weekend is homecoming so i’m having fun this lovely Friday afternoon finishing up most of my weekend work! Til’ next time!!

Fun times with Clubs

Now that school has officially been active for month, almost everybody has adjusted to the routine of SXU Life. Class, work, etc. Things get pretty predictable and, for those who allow it or have not time for anything else is, boring. No me gusta boredom. Luckily, there are ways to avoid the boredom from overtaking your college life. Now, can you have as much fun as colleges portrayed in movies and other media have, probably not…probably, but there are options. For me, clubs, campus events, and people are a good way to occupy your free time(and sleep is definitely something you’ll learn to love and want for. Trust me, you and your bed will have a very close relationship, if you don’t already).

Just in case you didn't see the flyers obnoxiously posted everywhere!

Advertisements obnoxiously posted everywhere!  Refusal to take down ads equally obnoxious.

Clubs will definitely keep you busy if you don’t have anything to do. If you have a hobby or just some activity you enjoy doing, there is probably a club for it. And if there isn’t, you can make a club for it. I’m currently in the process of creating the club “Gamer Madness” which is a club for gamers. What type of gamers? Every FPS, TCG, RPG-ing one of them!!! Every gamer cult you can think, Trading card game, video game, Role-playing, if the game exist, we will probably play it. It’s a work in progress but I have high hopes for it.

Did I mention obnoxious advertisements. Well, just case, here's another.

Did I mention obnoxious advertisements. Well, just in case, here’s another.

Also, there is improv club. Any one that has been an executive to a club or a coordinator of any kind to a group knows that it can be time consuming and difficult, but it is worthwhile to see everything come together and to work hard to make events better and more entertaining to members and admirers. And, of course, the hilarity that ensues when you put a bunch of people dedicating to being stupidly funny and having fun.  Regardless, We have had are first show this semester and was a…

The good Nerds

No, not those nerds.

This will be my 4th year being a part of an anime club, and Fierce anime club does not disappoint. Fun events related to anime as well as, of course, watching anime. I wish I could attend more meetings but you’ll find your time on campus will run out quickly if your involved in many different organizations. As well as the time your homework will take out of that. I’m not much for scheduling, but it can definitely be helpful.

Fierce Anime Club Picture

Whew, so much to do, and so little time. Although, it’s much better than having so little to do, and so much time. Keep busy readers and enjoy life.

Some of Chicago’s Best Tourists Attractions!

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone had a great weekend and this great weather, while it lasts. Either being from Chicago or living in Chicago for school, you can find an endless amount of activities to do in the city. Chicago was ranked as the top tourist spot in America and it’s not hard to see why that is.

The Bean in downtown Chicago.

Being in Chicago, you can take in a baseball game of the Chicago Cubs at one of Chicago’s hottest spots, Wrigleyville. You can take in some sight-seeing in Chicago as well. One of the more popular sight-seeing venues in Chicago is the Bean. That’s right, a gigantic bean located in downtown Chicago! Another very popular sight-seeing venue is one of the biggest buildings in the world, called the Willis Tower. It is the second largest building in America and it also has a see-through glass floor at the top of the building where people take pictures and can walk on it as well.

Chicago's famous Garrett's Popcorn.

Chicago is known for their great food spots as well. You can get some of Chicago’s great pizza at Giordano’s or some of Chicago’s favorite popcorn at Garrett’s Popcorn, located at various spots in the downtown area as well.

One of the Lollapalooza Concerts

Chicago is also known for great summer activities. You can visit the Taste of Chicago, an event that takes place in July, and take in some good food and music, where some of your favorite artists perform. Another great event is Lollapalooza. This event is where many different artists perform for a weekend for their fans.

The Red-Line is one of the many transit options that people can take to get to downtown Chicago.

The Red-Line is one of the many transit options that people can take to get to downtown Chicago.

If you believe that it would be a problem to get to these events or downtown, trust me, it won’t be. There are various forms of transportation in Chicago. You can take the bus, a car, different train routes such as the Pink Line, Red Line, Blue Line, Green Line, etc., all depending on where you are coming from. This is something that many cities/towns do not have. It is always a spectacle when traveling to downtown Chicago or anywhere in Chicago for that matter. This is why Chicago is known as one of, if not the best tourist attraction in the United States!
