Out and About

This weekend brought the Chicago land area some warmer temperatures and a much needed break from the snow! Due to relatively calm weather, I was able to get out with my friends and do a few fun things on and around campus!

We started our weekend with a trip to 115 Bourbon Street in Merionette Park, just a short five or ten minute drive from campus. My friends and I love to go the saloon for line dancing on Wednesday nights, but it is an even more popular spot on weekends. We had a great time watching one of our favorite local bands, Too White Crew, who perform old school rap and hip hop complete with a group of amazing dancers! Check out their website and attend a show if you can (and are 21 or over), you won’t be disappointed!

On Saturday, I got to do one of my favorite things, shopping! I am a huge advocate for buying clothes second hand to save money and resources. This weekend, I went to one of my favorite second hand stores, Plato’s Closet. Sometime last year the chain opened a store in Chicago Ridge, right near the mall and very convenient for SXU students. This weekend was what they call a “grab bag sale”. This means you get to fill a designated bag with as many clearance items as possible and you get the whole bag for only $10! It’s a great deal (especially for us college students) and my friends and I always have a great time looking through the clothes and finding items that suit our style. To find one near you, check out this website.

I hope everyone had a great weekend and was able to get out of the house and have some fun! Until next time!

Upcoming Week/Weekend Ahead

2Hello everyone, I hope that you all had a great week this past week and are enjoying your weekend as well. It’s that time of year once again. For everyone to go broke for the unofficial holiday known as Valentine’s Day! Trying to impress your Valentines is never an easy process, especially when it’s you’re celebrating your first Valentine’s Day as a couple. Trust me, I know! I wish I had some advice to give on the matter, but I don’t. I know I’m kind of terrified to give my presents to my girlfriend, not knowing what she’ll think of them. However, I have such an amazing girlfriend that she’ll love the gifts no matter what, because they’re coming from me. That’s why we mesh so well together. The little things make us happy and it has nothing to do with money or other frivolous things.

1However, before I can enjoy Valentine’s Day with my beautiful lady, I have to get passed a couple of exams first. My exams are in math and science, my two least favorite subjects. However, as I have stated in my blog posts before, I have to go into these exams with a fresh mind and with a positive attitude as well. I cannot go into these exams feeling defeated because that will be the end result for me if I do so. Confidence is key in situations like these and I have the utmost confidence in myself that I will pass these exams. Another factor is studying, which is something that I have already started to do. Graduation is right at the finish line and I am not lettinganything or anyone stand in my way from achieving something that I have worked so hard to accomplish!

3With that being said, I hope that everyone has a great and blessed upcoming week and weekend. Also, enjoy Valentine’s Day with your significant other, which is something that I will most definitely be doing once I handle business first!

Red? White? Black?

Valentines day is just around the corner! It is next Saturday, the 14th (duh, of course).

For my ladies who don’t know what to wear and want some ideas on clothes or make up looks. Here are some videos. I love these girls. They are so pretty and nice and know how to have fun. Of course please take into consideration the kind of weather in Chicago because we know how that goes!

Please feel free to browse their channels! I personally think they are all great. I love many of their looks for any special occasion really. I am such a make up junkie that my next blog post will be a review of my make up collection lol I hope you are all have a great weekend! Study Study Study!

Lights Out

Hi everyone,

My blog post for this week is going up a bit late and once I explain my weekend, you’ll understand why.

Unfortunately,  a close family friend passed away late Friday night so although I had not planned to, I went home Saturday morning to attend the service on Sunday afternoon.

I had been looking at the weather forecast as I normally do so I saw this snow storm coming. But, I figured even if I got stranded at home on Sunday, I would just leave early Monday morning when the roads were clear and make it back to campus in time for class.

I NEVER anticipated what was really in store for us. I woke up early Sunday morning to an already significant blanket of snow. I wasn’t panicking yet, I’ve lived in the Midwest my entire life so snow is nothing new.

However, things got a lot more complicated as the morning continued. All of the sudden, the electricity in our house flickered for a moment and then shut off. In my area of the south suburbs we get power outages a lot during severe thunderstorms in the summer. In fact, we were out of power for several days last summer.

But let me tell you, a power outage during snow storm is a completely different story. We quickly realized that without electricity, we had no heat. With the snow piling up, conditions continuing to worsen and no estimate from ComEd as to when the power might be restored, we started to realize that we were going to have to escape while we still could.

We were lucky enough to be able to make it to the service that afternoon before the storm transitioned into blizzard conditions. We returned home to find our power still off and decided to make a break for it and travel to my aunt’s house for the night. The roads were quite treacherous, but we made it there safely. Our power was finally restored at about 10 am Monday morning and we spent the rest of the day digging out and catching up on work that had piled up during the outage.

Moral of the story, this weekend made me realize how lucky I am for more than one reason. Experiencing the death of someone close to you always makes you realize how fortunate you are to be alive and healthy. Being forced to go without heat and electricity during a dangerous storm made me appreciate the fact that I have a heated home, a roof over my head, food AND family and friends that are willing to help me out with whatever I need. As we traveled during the storm and saw many cars spin out, get stuck or crash, I felt very fortunate to have made it to all of our destinations safely, many people were not so lucky.

Despite the series of events that took place over the weekend, I must admit that this storm was something to be in awe of, I’m sure many would agree. The power of nature never ceases to amaze me! I hope everyone had a better weekend than I did! Be careful out there, stay warm!

Giving Back To The Older Generation

1I hope that everyone had a great week and are enjoying their weekend as well. For myself, it was a smooth week and weekend. I didn’t do anything too exciting, except for doing volunteer work at a retirement home! It was a humbling experience that I will never forget and it just made me more appreciative of the older generation.

2The event that was being put together for the older people was a prom event. We invited all of the residents to come out and play games, vote for a king and queen and we played music with having them dance as well. It was a great time and the event was a huge success. The was great to see smiles on their faces and them having a great time as well. You feel as though you contributed to making their day!

3They loved playing bingo and that was the only game we played actually. We gave away a few prizes to the winners as well. I must say that they looked adorable playing bingo and dancing. They didn’t let them being older hold them back from enjoying the event and enjoying life in general. I love the fact that I agreed to participate in the service with my girlfriend. No question, a great experience hands down!

4There is another event being held this evening. It’s the Super Bowl! I love watching sports and my favorite NFL team is playing in the Super Bowl. I am fully pulling for the Seattle Seahawks for going back-to-back with winning the Super Bowl. I always have a great time watching the game, and this year should be no exception! Plus, I’m trying to make my girlfriend a bigger fan of sports. I’m sure I can though!

5With that being said, I hope that everyone enjoys the rests of their weekend and having a great upcoming week as well!

A Beautiful Weekend For the Minnesota girl in the Windy City

heart Hello all, so the end of January is around the corner and the beginning of February is here, a perfect month! And the day that many dread is near, Valentines day. Now technically I do have a Valentine’s, and I have for the past two years, but I still am not the biggest fan of it.. The idea that I’m suppose to tell my significant other I love them, the same day as everyone else and do a date just as everyone else.. It sounds controlling and weird right? Or no? Well, this year I have decided to end the protest of Valentine’s Day and I am stepping up! Now I can’t say what my plans are just yet because my boyfriend might actually read my blog.. But after Valentine’s Day I shall tell ya how it went! Now for those like me who love history you need to watch the link about Al Capone! Super cool because he was in Chicago when he did it, but yeah, he made Valentines cooler. http://www.history.com/topics/saint-valentines-day-massacre

The SXU student I want tobre highlight this week is Breanna Nelson, or what she is known as by her freshman as Brea! Brea is a sophomore here and she is my RPAL! She has been there for my academic break cries, to working out together, she really knows how to give a pep talk as well! Really getting to see her in the halls just brightens my day! She is always cheerful! Even if she is studying with her heads in the books in the cafeteria she always greets you to a hug!  chicago baby

And hopefully this beautiful picture will make you happy with the views of downtown Chicago! Friday was so nice and warm! I hope everyone had a great week and has a good one for this upcoming one! Get those Valentines thoughts going! And remember, you can’t be as bad as Al Capone!
