The School Year is about done!

Hey Guys,

I don’t know about all of you, but I am pretty glad that school is finally wrapping up and this semester is coming to a close. The end of this semester came by very quickly and I started getting extremely busy! It’s time to get excited about the summer!
This summer I have a lot of great things going on!
The week after school ends I’ll be going to two concerts, one at the Bottom Lounge in Chicago and then the following day I’ll be making a trip out to Columbus, Ohio to go to a huge music festival in Rock on the Range.
At the bottom lounge I’ll be seeing the band Red.  I saw them earlier this year, but this time they will be headlining their own show. They put on a pretty good show, so I’m excited for that!

The following day, I’ll be taking a trip to Columbus, Ohio for Rock on the Range featuring a great lineup consisting of Halestorm, Bullet For My Valentine, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, A Day to Remember, Stone Sour, and the Smashing Pumpkins.ROTR I don’t think I could find a show with a better line up, so I absolutely cannot wait for this show! This should be one busy summer, but I am ready for it!

Make sure you all go out and have a great summer, we don’t have very many summers left before we enter the real world.

This week Saint Xavier hosted a program along with the Beverly Arts Center called Breakfast with the Experts. Breakfast with the Experts was a program that brought the program director of 670 the Score670 Mitch Rosen to talk about what it’s like to be in charge of a big time radio station. Mr. Rosen gave his insights on what it was like to be the top dog at the biggest sports radio station in Chicago and shared information on how he was able to get to the position he is currently in. During his speech, Mr. Rosen introduced one of the members of the audience who just so happened to be Ed Farmer, the play-by-play announcer of the Chicago White Sox. After the show, a couple of the media people and myself from our school went up and we were able to talk to the two of them after the speech was over. While talking with Ed, myself and another broadcaster from WXAV Brandon were told that we could come up to the broadcast booth this Sunday to see what it’s like to put on a live broadcast. Brandon and I are both broadcasters for Saint Xavier athletics, so being given this opportunity was a dream come true for us.

This specific instance is one of the reasons I am glad that I chose Saint Xavier to be the school that I wanted to further my education. Saint Xavier gives students so many opportunities to help you figure out what type of career path you want to choose and also gives you the ability to interact with people in the field just like I was able to on Tuesday with Mitch Rosen. If there is one thing that I could encourage everyone at Saint Xavier to do is to take any opportunity you get from SXU. There are so many career fairs at guest speakers on campus, everyone needs to get out there and experience them first hand!

I Can’t Wait For Summer!

Well guys and girls, the semester is slowly coming to an end! I can’t wait for classes to end!
This summer I have a lot of concerts to go to, so I am ready for this semester to end already.

As soon as school ends, I have a bunch of concerts lined up for this summer! The biggest concert I’m going to see is Rock On The Range May 18th in Columbus, Ohio.

The band I want to see the most is A Day To Remember. I was hoping to see them back on April 6th, but I was on the Awakenings retreat so I was unable to go. If you have never heard of Rock on the Range, take a look at the website!

The following week I’ll be going to the Cubs vs White Sox game at US Cellular field. I haven’t gone to a Crosstown Classic in a long time so I am pumped for that!

One of the greatest weeks of the semester!

Hey Guys,

I don’t know how many of you are aware of this, but there is a great opportunity every semester on campus. That opportunity is the SXU retreat Awakenings. Luckily I was able to get to go on this retreat and I had a blast! Although I am not able to reveal details

Group photo from Awakenings

regarding the retreat, I can tell you it’s an amazing opportunity that in my opinion you should not pass up!

I had a really good time and made a lot of new friends from Saint Xavier that I never knew before, it was a great way to build yourself up and meet some new people!

I would recommend going to anyone at SXU, you won’t regret it!

As you all know, I work for the Saint Xavier radio station WXAV 88.3 fm, I get a lot of really cool opportunities because we are in fact a radio station. Although I have been able to interview some of our men’s basketball players, I have never actually been given the opportunity to interview someone that is famous or well know. That all changed yesterday!

Yesterday, I was given the opportunity along with my friend Maloree to get to go to a concert in Joliet for the band Lacuna Coil. Lacuna Coil is a hard rock/metal band from Italy

Lacuna Coil

who have a lot of recognition overseas. I have never been able to interview a band before, so this was quite the experience. Maloree and I were able to go on the tour bus and meet with Andrea Ferro one of the lead singers and interview him. I was not exactly nervous at first but I was pretty excited to get the opportunity that many people do not get in their lifetimes. As soon as we were on the bus, all of the little bit of nervousness went completely away with the warm greetings he gave us!

Be sure to tune into Closing Time, the radio show of Mal and I Thursday to hear the interview. It will be played sometime between 8-10 pm.

Baseball is Back!!

One of my favorite times of the year is finally upon us once again! Baseball is back! This season, I decided to purchase a 14 game ticket plan for the Chicago White Sox, because it gave me the opportunity to purchase games that are normally out of my price range. I will now be attending one of the series against the Cubs at US Cellular field, which is a series I have not been able to go to in recent years, so it’s nice getting to see the Crosstown Classic once again!I’m really excited to start going to games once again! Unfortunately, Last season the final White Sox game I was going to be able to attend was called due to rain so my friends and I were unable to make it to anymore games the rest of the season… This could have been questionably the biggest game of the year for the White Sox because it was late September with few games left in the regular season. The White Sox were playing the Tigers (for those of you that

don’t know, they are their rival.)

This season, I want to be able to make it to as many games as possible! Living at Saint Xavier is going to make it possible to make it to a lot of these early April games.

Spring Break is Over!

Front Row at Hollywood Undead

Hey Guys! I don’t know about all of you, but I had a great extended spring break. It went by very quickly though as it always does.

To the right here is an image from a Hollywood Undead concert I attended to rap up my spring break! It was an amazing concert! I was able to get front row at the concert. This was the fourth time I saw the band and it was easily the best experience I have had at one of their concerts because of how close I was in relation to the stage! If you have never listened to Hollywood Undead, I think you should give them a try, at least their older music.

As you know if you have read my previous posts, I was in Arizona for spring break! While I was there, I was able to attend a Phoenix Suns game and I had a blast! If you have never been to Arizona, I recommend that you check it out because that is one fun place to be! The Phoenix Suns arena is definitely one to check out if you are a big basketball fan.

One of the main reasons my parents and I visited Arizona was for spring training. I went to a lot of games over spring training. One of the games was the Cubs @ White Sox. At the game, they gave Saint Xavier a mention on the scoreboard and I thought that was pretty cool! Take a look for yourself.
So to wrap this up, if you ever get the chance, you should definitely take a trip to Arizona, you will not regret it!

Road Trip!

Road Trip!

Hey Guys,

Will here, but right now I am not in Chicago at Saint Xavier; I am in Branson, Missouri getting ready to make the call for our school’s men’s basketball team in the first round of the NAIA National Championship tournament. The game is tonight at 9:45 p.m. This is by far the latest game I have ever called, so it should be an interesting one. I left with the team back on Monday at 8 am and was able to work it out with my teachers so that I ended up getting an extra week of spring break!

So far this trip has been pretty fun! We had a long bus ride into Missouri,

Branson, MO

Branson, MO

but luckily we were on a pretty awesome coach bus, so it was almost like an airplane on wheels. To get the team pumped up we watched a great selection of movies; The Avengers, Skyfall, Friday Night Lights, and The A-Team.

So far the team has practiced, and we have gone out to eat, but unfortunately they have not played a game yet. The first few games of the tournament have started and there have been a lot of upsets! Hopefully our school will not be one of those upsets as they find themselves a 2 seed in there bracket!

Tune in to some of the action on WXAV 88.3 fm or wxav.com tonight at 9:45 pm as we will get the tournament underway!

This Semester is going by Quick!

Hey guys!

This semester has been going by very fast. It seems like it was just yesterday we were getting ready to come back to school from winter break. The week after next we will already be on spring break, and I myself cannot wait!

As you all know, I am the play-by-play announcer for our schools men’s basketball team. For those of you who are not aware of it, our school has had one heck of a season and are getting ready to go down to Missouri to compete for the NAIA National Championship! Since I am one of the broadcasters for our school, I will be able to go down with the team to be able to call all of their games in the tournament. I like to think I am one of the luckiest people on campus because of this. Not only do I get to have an extra week off of school, I get to take a trip down to Missouri to be a part of the NAIA National Championship tournament! Hopefully by the time I return, our school will have another team atop the list of National Champions.

When we get back from the tournament, it will be spring break! I myself cannot wait for spring break either! I am a huge Chicago White Sox fan and this year for spring break, I will be traveling to Arizona to go to some spring training MLB games. This should be pretty exciting for me because I have never been this far in the west, and I have never been to spring training before. One of the big events I am excited for in Arizona is getting to see the White Sox vs. the Cubs March 15th. I think it will be quite the experience for me because of the huge sports fan that I am!

Be sure to read my blog next week and I will keep everyone updated on the progress of the basketball team and my experience in Missouri!

     See you later!

WXAV

Hey Guys,

Will here again!

I wanted to tell you about all of the cool things I can do at the radio station!

One of my favorite parts of Saint Xavier is working and being a part of the student run radio station WXAV. WXAV allows me to play the music that I want to and allows me to learn skills that will help me out in the future. I am seeking a degree in mass communications, so everything that I learn at the radio station allows me to develop my skills.

Today, I was able to take part in a conference call at the radio station with two of the cast members of the hit NBC television show Parks and Recreations, Amy Poehler and Adam Scott. I am a big fan of both of them, so it was quite the experience to take part in the conference call. Unfortunately I was not able to ask a question, but that is part of the learning experience.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I am the deputy sports director which gives me the opportunity to do a lot of creative things with the station. One great part of my job at the radio station is being able to call the play-by-play for Saint Xavier’s men’s basketball team. I am pretty excited tonight to be able to call my first CCAC tournament game for the guys. I have always been a huge sports fan and always thought it would be incredible to be able to announce games and because of WXAV and Saint Xavier I have been able to have that dream come true.

Hello, I’m Will

Hello, my name is William Weyant. I am a junior at Saint Xavier. I recently transferred here from Joliet Junior College. I am a mass communication major currently just hoping to have a job after I am finished with my schooling. Although I am a junior, my intended goal is to graduate in December of 2014. Fall of 2012 was my first semester here at SXU. One of the reasons I decided to choose

Saint Xavier to continue my education was because of the student media department at the school. Last semester I was the deputy sports editor at the Xavierite. This semester I became the deputy sports director at WXAV. I do the play-by-play for the men’s basketball team and have two radio shows on WXAV.

I write sports articles for the Xavierite as a sports columnist. I work for the school’s media services department where I deliver technical equipment to classrooms. Saint Xavier has clearly proven to me that it was the best possible choice of a school for me to continue my education and I look forward to blogging more for you as the semester progresses.
